This is the foremost intelligible and tell-able source for this American cataclysm, the Civil War. Born “less than 13 years after 1865, [Sandberg] learned (having to unlearn some of it later) of the late war from veterans who were still rather young men when, as a boy, I knew them.”—indispensable!
Top edge yellow toned. Top-edge tone is showing some dim spotting on Volume 1. Also Volume 1 has some slight curling on corners of front and rear board edges. Dust jackets are a light beige/tan with some slight scuffing and soiling and three slight (¼-½inch) tears are on the spine of the dust jacket of Volume 4 [see images]. Otherwise, all volumes are tight, clean, unmarked, undamaged with no foxing. As stated on the title page this set contains 426 half-tones of photographs, and 244 cuts of cartoons, letters, and documents. Truly a worthy set for the scholar/collector/reader.
